Part 14: Something new

It turns out, life does not always get in the way of your plans. Sometimes things go smoothly, and basically turn out how you expected. You just do a thing, it goes OK, then you write about it for some reason.

Eh?! A Rally Quest post without any insurmountable barriers or global disruptions to overcome? No major revelations, nostalgic segues, history lessons or journeys of personal transformation? Not even any philosophical musings about the nature of existence?! This is something new.

It may be new, but unfortunately it doesn't make for a particularly scintillating blog post.

So, I'll keep it brief...

My latest track day went OK. Yawn.

✅ It was very sunny. I managed to avoid sunburn.

I achieved PB time of 1:27.56 around Hampton Downs' National circuit – 1.68 seconds faster than before.

I'm continuing to find some incremental (and unexciting) improvements here and there.

My target is to get into the 1:25.00s which is considered officially 'good' by people who know what they're talking about. Finding an additional 2 seconds is a challenge, but definitely do-able.

I made a new pal. I buddied up with a friendly fellow called Chris. He's been on a similar path to me but is a few years ahead on said path. He gave me some useful and practical tips about what I can do to make my car better for the track and pointed me towards NaZCAR's Lemons as the most (relatively) inexpensive step into (somewhat) competitive racing. It's basically the 24 Hours of Le Mans (hehe, get it?) but with cars that originally cost under $1k (plus $15-20k to add a roll cage and safety gear). Something to consider for the future.

✅ I didn't die/crash. Someone in a Corvette did crash, but he was OK. My tyres, however, have well and truly bought the farm:

✅ Had chips for lunch. They were fine.

So yeah, nothing particularly exciting happened in the telling – but it was hands down the best day of the year so far for me! Looking forward to the next one in May.
